Salome

by Carole Mertz

Flimsily draped
Sassy
All-too-ready

To follow
Mother’s
Greedy footsteps

Messenger
Of God
Soon beheaded

(John neither ate
Nor drank)
His head offered

While Salome
Danced
And danced and danced

Knife in hand
Platter
Dripping holy blood
