Maternal Fears

by Mary Alacoque Ryan

Two days after the funeral
she found his young pyjamas.
Like a smoker about to quit
she dragged in his last smell.

Now each night
I bend low over you,
smell your smell,
feel your skin and hair,
and inhale you into my very soul.
